How Is Markup Calculated?
Markup is the amount added to the cost of a product to determine its selling price.
Selling Price = Cost + Markup Profit
For example, if a product costs 500 and you apply a 30% markup:
500 × 30 ÷ 100 = 150
Selling price:
500 + 150 = 650
Markup vs Profit Margin
Markup and profit margin are related but they measure profit from different reference points.
Markup compares profit with the original cost.
Profit margin compares profit with the selling price.
Profit Margin % = Profit ÷ Selling Price × 100
For example, a product that costs 100 and sells for 150 has a profit of 50.
Markup: 50%
Profit margin: 33.33%
This difference is important when comparing pricing strategies.
Common Markup Examples
| Cost | Markup | Profit | Selling Price | Profit Margin |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 100 | 10% | 10 | 110 | 9.09% |
| 100 | 20% | 20 | 120 | 16.67% |
| 100 | 25% | 25 | 125 | 20% |
| 100 | 50% | 50 | 150 | 33.33% |
| 100 | 100% | 100 | 200 | 50% |
What Is a 20% Markup?
A 20% markup means adding an amount equal to 20% of the original cost.
For a cost of 1,000:
1,000 × 20 ÷ 100 = 200
Selling price:
1,000 + 200 = 1,200
What Is a 30% Markup?
A 30% markup on a cost of 500 is:
500 × 30 ÷ 100 = 150
The selling price becomes:
500 + 150 = 650
What Is a 50% Markup?
A 50% markup adds half of the original cost.
If a product costs 800:
800 × 50 ÷ 100 = 400
Selling price:
800 + 400 = 1,200
How to Calculate Markup From Cost and Selling Price
If you already know the cost and selling price, you can calculate markup using:
Example:
Cost = 200
Selling Price = 260
Profit = 60
60 ÷ 200 × 100 = 30% markup
